Overview

There is a kind of clutter with nowhere to live: hair things, the second pair of glasses, the scarf you take off at the door and then carry from room to room.

None of it needs a drawer, and all of it needs a lid. This is a small piece of furniture built on that one idea, for a room where soft and gold are welcome.

Care

Brush the pile up again with your hand or a soft brush. Spot clean only.

What makes the pile stand up

The channels

A flat panel of long-pile fur looks like a shapeless lump as soon as light falls on it. Stitching it down at intervals raises the fur into ridges, and the ridges give the light something to catch, which is why this looks like a piece of furniture and not a beanbag.

It is practical as well. Fur held in place by seams has much less room to mat and flatten where you sit.

What goes inside

The cavity covers the whole footprint and is lined in dark fabric, a kinder background for tangled things than a pale one. It takes scarves, spare bedding, knitting, chargers, a hair dryer and its cable, and the toys that are technically still in use.

There are no dividers and no tray. If you want order inside, put in a small basket, because anything dropped in loose ends up in one layer.

Worth knowing before you buy

Where it suits best

It suits calm households best. Long pile shows every trace of pet hair, so homes with a shedding cat or a muddy dog will see it soonest. It is also made as a seat and not a footrest: heels resting in the same place night after night flatten the pile there.

The lid is loose and not hinged, which is what lets it lift away with one hand, and it is worth knowing if there is a toddler in the house who might lift it.

Bought for the hall, moved twice

It went to the front door, then to the end of the bed, and it has settled at the dressing table. Wherever it lands, whatever was on the floor around it goes inside within a day. I did not plan any of that.

Legs needed a minute

Screwed the four on myself, which took two minutes, then it rocked slightly on my old boards. Turning one of the little discs at the bottom fixed it. Fine, but nobody tells you that bit until you are sat on the floor.

Mint is softer than the screen

I hesitated over the green because it looked quite sharp online. In the room it is much more muted, closer to a dusty eucalyptus. Sits fine next to oak and cream, which is what I was worried about.

Frequently asked questions

What size is it exactly?
We have no verified finished measurements to publish, so we do not invent any. For scale, think of a seat for one person, closer to the footprint of a bedside table than to a bench.
Is it real fur?
It is a synthetic pile and always has been. No animal is involved at any stage, which is worth saying plainly and not leaving to the word faux in a spec line.
Can the cover be washed?
It has no removable cover or zip. The fur is fixed to the shell, so cleaning means treating a mark where it occurs. If that matters to you, Ink hides marks best.
Does it come assembled?
The body is finished and the four legs screw on. It needs no tools and has no bag of fittings to lose; a couple of minutes on the floor and it is done.
Will the pile go flat where I sit?
To some extent, yes, as any long pile does. Run a hand against the lie of it and the fibres stand up again, and that is all the upkeep it needs.
